Discover Ballooning Adventures in Cumbria

Did you know that Cumbria is home to England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and the country’s largest lake, Lake Windermere? This county is not just about scenic beauty—it holds deep historical and geological significance. Cumbria’s landscape has been shaped by volcanic activity millions of years ago, leaving behind the dramatic mountains and valleys that define the region today. It’s also famous for being part of the historic borderlands between England and Scotland, with remnants of Hadrian’s Wall still visible in parts of the county.

The Lake District, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Cumbria’s most famous regions, drawing poets like William Wordsworth who immortalised the area in his works. From glacial lakes to craggy peaks, Cumbria’s natural beauty offers a unique blend of history and geography. Flying over Cumbria in a hot air balloon offers not just a view, but an experience that connects you to centuries of history, from Roman ruins to the old Viking settlements that once occupied this rugged landscape.

Each balloon flight reveals a patchwork of lakes, fells, and ancient woodlands, with the possibility of drifting over the Eden Valley or even catching a glimpse of the Irish Sea. Cumbria’s deep-rooted history and its role in shaping the British landscape make it a truly special place to explore from the skies.

Seasonal Highlights

Cumbria’s landscape shifts dramatically with the seasons, making each flight unique. Lake District (Graythwaite Estate)

The Graythwaite Estate launch site is situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spanning 5,000 acres of stunning countryside, this estate is not only a hub for balloon flights but also has deep literary roots. The author Beatrix Potter drew inspiration from the estate’s woodlands for her story The Fairy Caravan. In fact, Esthwaite Hall, located within the estate, was home to her beloved character, Jeremy Fisher. The estate’s beautiful grounds and rich cultural history make it a spectacular spot to start a ballooning adventure.

Fun Fact: Graythwaite Hall Gardens, which open to the public in spring and summer, cover seven acres and include woodlands and floral displays that provide stunning views from above during a hot air balloon ride.

Dalemain (Ullswater)

Taking off from the Dalemain Estate near Ullswater, this launch site offers sweeping views of one of Cumbria’s most famous lakes. Ullswater, the second-largest lake in England, stretches for 7.5 miles and was the inspiration for William Wordsworth’s famous poem Daffodils. From the balloon, you can see the picturesque village of Pooley Bridge and even spot Ullswater Steamers gliding across the water.

Fun Fact: Wordsworth’s stroll along Ullswater in the spring of 1802 inspired his iconic poem, describing the sight of thousands of daffodils lining the lake’s shore.

Carlisle

The Carlisle launch site sits just 10 miles from the Scottish border, offering passengers a unique opportunity to view some of the most historic sites in northern England. From the skies, you can catch glimpses of the ancient Carlisle Castle, the remnants of Hadrian’s Wall, and even the sprawling beauty of Upperby Park. On a clear day, views extend to the Lake District in the south and the North Pennines to the southeast. This launch site perfectly combines the historical and natural beauty of Cumbria.

Fun Fact: Carlisle was the site of the UK’s first-ever pillar box, erected in 1853. A replica of this historic post box can still be seen in the city centre today.

Devil’s Bridge (Kirkby Lonsdale)

Set beside the famous Devil’s Bridge, the Kirkby Lonsdale launch site is an ideal spot for those looking to explore the southern Lake District. The bridge, which dates back to the 12th or 13th century, is steeped in folklore about its construction, adding a layer of mystery to this scenic flight. As the balloon rises, passengers are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, which blends the wild beauty of the Lake District with the peaceful charm of rural Lancashire.

Fun Fact: According to legend, Devil’s Bridge was built by the devil himself in exchange for the soul of the first creature to cross it. Fortunately, a clever local tricked the devil by sending a dog across the bridge first!

He said, "When we landed, it took me around 20 minutes to actually get enough courage for myself to get down on one knee and ask her the question. I could see in her face that she was shocked which resulted in her taking a few minutes to give me an answer." The whole group celebrated with the couple after she said yes.
