Fun & Interesting Facts
The Bakewell pudding and its better known variant, the Bakewell tart were indeed first made in the town. While the origins are subject to debate, the story goes that in 1820, the landlady of a town pub asked her cook to make a jam tart with an egg and almond pastry but it went wrong. The result was a hit with pub patrons and grew to become a dessert known across the world.
