About

Experience the North East’s captivating and rugged landscape as you go up, up and away on an unforgettable County Durham hot air balloon ride.

Take to the skies for the flying experience of a lifetime you will still be talking about for years to come.

Launching from the picturesque Witton Castle Country Park near Bishop Auckland, the views from the basket of our iconic big red balloon are truly spectacular and our closest balloon ride to Durham itself.

Out to the east you may spot the North Sea Coast while to the north, with the right wind on a clear day Durham city is easily distinguished by the beautiful outline of Durham Cathedral on top of the hill.

Or the wind direction might bring into view Raby Castle and beyond, to the outlines of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales as you take life higher at sunrise or sunset.

Whichever way the wind takes you, you will never forget your majestic County Durham hot air balloon ride experience.

Directions

Witton Castle Country Park is Situated just off the A68 at Witton-Le-Wear, just North of West Auckland.

From the South take the A68 from West Auckland towards Corbridge. Follow the A68 turning left in Etherley, after which you will pass the 68 Café. Drop down the hill about 1km to a crossroads and turn right (signposted for Escomb Saxon Church). From the North, head down the A68 towards West Auckland, and after you have passed Witton-Le-Wear look out for the Witton Castle hoardings in a field on your left. At the crossroads turn left (signposted for Escomb Saxon Church).

The entrance to Witton Castle is about half a mile down on your left hand side. Look out for the Holiday Homes for Sale signs.

Drive down the track through the barrier (if it is down, security will open it for you), and continue past the office. You will now see our big launch field on your left. Turn left at the bottom and drive round to the car park at the castle, then walk back up to meet us on the field.
